And what is the key to your pelvic floor?

YOUR WHOLE BODY!

In order to learn awareness and strength of the pelvic floor, we do gentle exercises that begin with a whole, full-body movement and then layer in the pelvic floor.

Subtle

The movements of the pelvic floor are subtle.  Sometimes it's hard to know if you are moving this part of you.  The Feldenkrais® Method has been shown to be very effective in helping increase awareness of the pelvic floor.

Synergistic

Just like every other part of us, the pelvic floor doesn't work alone.  It is a team player in your synergistic system of basic life functions. Instead of isolating the movement of the pelvic floor immediately, we begin with a full-body movement and layer in the pelvic floor movements. This way of learning has been shown to be very effective and anyone can do it.

Strong

If we contract a muscle continually, it actually becomes weak.  You will learn how to sense and embody the phases of relaxation and strengthening.  We have to sense where something is in us in order to move it and to strengthen it. We begin with awareness and this leads to strengthening.

Why I Took The Pelvic Floor Workshop

"I am a semi-retired pelvic floor physical therapist and I took Dorothy's pelvic floor course last year. It was an amazing course full of exploration combined with good verbal and manual cues which helped to isolate and integrate the pelvic floor muscles. I found it so helpful and it especially queued me in on areas of my pelvic and gluteal muscles that I did not realize were tightening so much. The workshop, with the education that Dorothy provided and the visualization as we walked through the pelvis, helped me gain a special awareness of my whole pelvic and hip girdle area.

I'm going to take the course again this year because I've had some back issues and urinary leakage. I want to be able to better locate the pelvic muscles that help control my bladder in order to prevent further leakage and to improve control over a period of time.

I am very active, which is important to me, and this work helps me with re-organizing my alignment. I would recommend this course for anyone who wants to have better control over their pelvic muscles both for bladder and bowel control. This is also very helpful to explore muscles that are tense and to learn how to release them. I have just returned to downhill skiing and I'm looking forward to doing the pelvic floor course again to help me stay dry as I ski."

What others are saying

"I have done the Pelvic Floor workshop twice. I get something new out of it each time! I had a big fall from my horse and had problems not only in my hip joint but also my pelvic floor. This workshop was very helpful. I am grateful because I am a more sensitive and balanced rider! My horse is thankful too!"

Linda Carpenter

"The Pelvic Floor Workshop has been a revelation each time I have taken it. The first time I was so delighted to finally get a real understanding of how all the parts fit together and work together. The workshop helped me with my nighttime urgency issues as well as with various bowel concerns. Understanding how the body is put together, then how it works by doing the slow mindful movement lessons helps me work WITH myself instead of against myself. I recommend this workshop highly!"

Priscilla Steedly

"At first I felt it was difficult to know where the pelvic floor was and to contract it. Then half way through the workshop it became clear! This felt very productive. This is information everyone needs--and best to learn as a young person!"
